At an increasing rate, I have been retained by clients who have had prior legal representation regarding the same matter for which I now represent them. I am often amazed at the poor quality of legal service and the amounts of money paid by the client for those poor services. Here are some ways to avoid being in the position of having to seek legal help from an attorney to repair damage done by your previous attorney. Require attention from your attorney to matters that you are concerned about. Do not be satisfied or put off with legal advice or suggestions from a secretary or legal assistant: insist upon communicating directly with your lawyer. Where services are rendered on an hourly basis, require your attorney to provide you with monthly itemized descriptions of the services that he or she has rendered on your behalf and for which payment is sought. Take the time to review and understand the itemization of services provided. If you have any question about the services provided or time devoted by the attorney to the services described, promptly ask your attorney. Maintain an active role in the attorney-client relationship. Be responsive to your attorney's need for information, cooperation, and attention to the matter involved in the representation.
